Vernon Terrace

Griffins Blog

This week we have started our new topic, Land Ahoy, and have really enjoyed learning about plastic pollution in the oceans. We have researched all about this important issue and even presented our own news reports to the class

Today the bug man came and visited us/ He brought with him some of his vast collection of reptiles and bugs. We got to handle snakes, lizards, tortoises and chinchillas. We learned all about the need to respect animals and live in harmony with them.

24/4/19   New Term starts today

Today was so exciting. We began our new topic Wriggle and Crawl. This half term we are going to be learning all about bugs, insects and creepy crawlies. This will include lots of fun science work on habitats and food chains. Also, we had a great time doing some fun art activities today. We made butterflies, dragonflies and are still working on our giant catterpillar sculpture.

1/4/19     Cricket comes to Vernon Terrace!

We are so fortunate that a coach from Northamptonshire Cricket Club will be coming in to give us a training session every Monday morning. We will be learning basik skills and movement for the game and will soon have the chance to bat and bowl and even play a few innings.

22/3/19    Trip to Abington Park

This Thursday we visited Abington Park for some science related work. We Went on a fun tree hunt and looked at classifying things that are living and dead. It was great to see how much life we could find, even in an urban area.

14/3/19    Science week

We have had a busy week. We made some mint and pea soup on Monday (some thought it was delicious but others felt it was horrible, ghastly and disgusting!). We then produced some beautiful writing based on this. We have been learning more about fractions. The best part of the week was science day activities where we did lots of fun experiments, including boat making, insulating ourselves against the cold and testing what happens when sea levels rise. Here are some photos of the day.

7/3/19    World Book day

Today we had lots of fun discovering the magic of books and reading. We went on book hunts around the school, did lots of book related activities and listened to amazing stories. Best of all, we each received a token for one FREE book. Make sure that you use it before it expires on 31st March!

Trip to Wyevale Garden Centre

Today Year 2 took a trip to Wyevale Garden Centre. We learned about different types of plants, both indoor and outdoor ones. We also found out about how plants need water and how some plants have adapted to different environments. One of our favourite parts was visiting the aquarium!

This week we have been learning about how to write letters. We hope to use our new found skills to write letters to all the people we love. Today we have been outside searching for interesting words we can use in our sentences.

We have such a busy week this week in Griffins class. On Tuesday we were lucky enough to visit St Giles Church to sing some fun seasonal songs. We also got to learn a little about how Christians celebrate Christmas.

Also, we have been busy getting ready, rehearsing and performing our Christmas play, Penguin Pete. We have had great fun and really enjoyed being up on stage.

This week we had a special lesson learning about the job of an engineer. We found out about how they design houses and make them strong and sturdy. We then designed and built our own towers using spaghetti sticks and trying out different construction methods.

Recently we had our trip to Warwick Castle as part of our Towers, Tunnels and Turrets topic. We had such a great day out. We learned about many things, from who has inhabited the castle down the years to how the castle was built to defend from enemies.

Particular highlights of the day included the birds of prey show and especially our climb right to the top of Guy's Tower and the spectacular views on offer from the summit.
