Purpose of Job

To support a pupil with a statement of special educational needs who has Down’s Syndrome
and to support teaching staff in raising pupil attainment and in the maintenance of a well ordered
environment. This may involve preparing and delivering learning activities for this child under the
guidance of the class teacher or Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo). It will include
monitoring, assessing, recording and reporting on this pupil’s progress. This role may also include
working with small groups of children from this class to develop the statemented pupil’s social and
emotional needs. This will include working with children at break-times.

Principle Accountabilities

To work in partnership with the class teacher, SENCo and other staff to facilitate access to the
National Curriculum for pupils with special educational needs including those with social, behavioural
and emotional needs.

To implement strategies to support pupils to raise their achievements in all subjects, such as giving
further explanations, by adapting work, by prompting or encouraging concentration and participation

To promote inclusive education and integration and help in the development of relationships by
encouraging appropriate interaction and socialisation with peers and other adults.

To assist in the assessment and recording of pupil progress and liaise with other staff to map

To deliver planned activities to the statemented pupil, individually or as part of a small group.

To support the class teacher in managing behaviour and by promoting good behaviour around the
school including breaktimes.

To liaise with the class teacher about individual children’s learning.

To undertake any duties planned by the class teacher, SENCo or Head teacher.

To attend learning support meetings and staff meetings where relevant.

To attend courses and keep up to date with new developments.

To comply with the procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality
and report concerns to an appropriate person.

Please Note:

As this post is funded to support a statemented child, should the child leave the school the funding
moves with the child and so the position would cease.
